There has long been arguments that Voyager’s Fifth Season Episode “Bliss” was proof that there was not and could not be a Janeway / Chakotay romance.

The episode is about a beast in space that eats starships and the beings inside. It is able to do this because it is telepathic and can project the victim’s deepest wishes, so people just fly their ship inside to be trapped. It projected to Voyager’s crew a way home and “messages” from home about what was waiting for them there.

Kathryn Janeway – She thought that Mark had sent her a message that he had called off his engagement and was waiting for her return.

Chakotay – He thought he had been pardoned, and offered a position teaching anthropology at the academy.

Tom Paris – He though he was offered a job testing new ships in Australia

B’Elanna – She thought all her Maquis friends had been discovered alive. They hadn’t been killed by the Cardassians.

Neelix – He thought Starfleet had given him an ambassadorship

Tuvok – He thought his wife met him in Voyager Corridor.

I have never seen this particular episode intil last week when I played the DVD.

Now on the surface, all the could be deep wishes, except for one thing, not one of those visions include any other Voyager crew member. Tom’s “greatest wish” doesn’t include B’Elanna, nor does B’Elanna’s include Tom. You would think at that point in the series that Neelix’s wishes would have included Naomi, but his didn’t. So it shouldn’t be any surprise then that Chakotay’s “wish” didn’t include Kathryn any more than hers did him.

I think there could be a story here, and I have been thinking of one, but this might be an interesting challenge. I would be very interested in what others come up with.
